Americans love to travel and last year, more than 41.7% of them took a trip. Mexicans traveled far less than their northern neighbors, with only 22.5% of them taking trips. Canada falls in the middle, with 32.3% traveling last year.

In North America, 35.2% of consumers traveled within the last year, slightly less than the global average of 36.8%. Hoteliers, when separately surveyed, traveled significantly more with 88.3% saying they traveled within the last year. The insights below allow us to better understand trends among the general population, free of industry bias.

Covid-19 threw a wrench in travel plans for lots of people. In North America, 41.7% of recent travelers had to cancel a trip, while another 29.3% had to postpone travel.

How Covid-19 Affected Travel Plans

73.3% of Americans, 70.8% of Mexicans and 64.4% of Canadians had travel plans affected by the pandemic. Americans had the highest rate of cancellations at 44.7% and Mexicans had the most trips postponed at 37.7%.

Even a pandemic can’t get in the way of travel for the majority of North Americans! Three out of four North Americans still expect to travel within the next year.

Travel Outlook

Mexicans expect to travel the most, with 84.8% saying they will travel within the next 12 months. Canadians expect to travel the least with 58% saying they plan to travel.

Our data shows that domestic travel will rebound first in North America. 59.3% of recent travelers said they will be looking to travel within their country, and 24.2% will stay within their own state or province.

Choosing a Location

Only 16.5% of North Americans will look at traveling abroad. Americans are least likely to travel abroad at 12.1%, while Canadians are most likely to travel abroad, at 28.6%.

When travel rebounds, chances are good that you will recognize your guests from previous stays. 54.2% of recent travelers will be looking to stay at a hotel they have stayed at before while only 18.4% say they will stay at a hotel they are unfamiliar with.

27.3% of North Americans will be looking at a short-term rental, such as Airbnb, which is slightly above the global average of 25.9%.

While 45.4% of North Americans quoted Covid-19 concerns when booking their next accommodation, it’s good news that only 10.8% cite the status of the pandemic (out of hoteliers’ control) being the reason. This means that hotels can help ease safety & cleanliness concerns for 34.6% of the demand.

How the Stay Will Change

19.7% of travelers considered location their top consideration, and often referenced family visits as the reason. North Americans are slightly less cost conscious, with price and booking policies a top consideration for only 15.3%, versus the global average of 17.1%.

When the survey was fielded, 38.9% of Americans and 38.2% of Mexicans said they were considering booking a trip in the next 6 months, while only 24.2% of Canadians were considering travel.

Recovering Demand

The country with the highest uncertainty was Mexico, with 37.2% saying they are unsure of when they would book. 7.7% of Canadians were  not planning to travel, compared to only 5.4% of Americans and 4.7% of Mexicans.

Canadians brought up that average significantly since 79.0% of them did not consider booking a trip during that month. 20.7% of North Americans considered a trip but never booked and 10.8% made a booking.

Mexicans booked the most trips in April, at 16.4%. Canadians were least likely to book a trip, at 7.4%.

When looking at when recent travelers would actually depart on their next trip, 29.3% of North Americans were unsure of the timeline, while 5.5% did not expect to travel at all.

Canadians had the most uncertainty with 32.7% reporting they are unsure of the timeline, while only 24.9% of Mexicans and 29.2% of Americans were unsure.
